JERON’S 104-POINT GAME REMEMBERED

By Henry Liao

How time flies!

January 5 marks the first anniversary of the greatest scoring game by a high school player in Philippine basketball history!

On January 5, 2011, Xavier School's Jeron Teng scored a mind-boggling 104 points in Xavier School's 164-74 shellacking of Grace Christian College in a Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) game at the Jacinto Tiu Court inside the Xavier School campus.

During the 2010-11 season, Teng averaged 39.5 points over 16 games as the Golden Stallions went 15-1 en route to capturing a league record-setting fourth straight Juniors

championship.

Xavier School posted a lily-white 12-0 record during the double round-robin elimination phase, beat St.Jude Catholic School in the knockout semifinals then scored a 2-1 decision over upset-conscious Hope Christian High School in the best-of-three finals to become the first school in TL annals to snare the Juniors crown for four consecutive years.

Significantly, Hope Christian High School took Game 1 of the best-of-three Finals to break Xavier School's 32-game winning streak over four seasons in the Juniors Division of the Tiong Lian competitions.

Teng, who’s now a HS senior, spearheads Xavier's "Strive for Five" campaign in the 2012 TL tournament, which gets underway on Saturday, January 14, at the UNO Gym.

Unlike in the previous year, this season's format calls for a single-round elimination format. Therefore, it's important to finish first or second in the elims as it carries with it a twice-to-beat advantage.

In his first three seasons with the XS Juniors, Teng owns a 33-1 record in the TL games. He was 9-0 in 2009 (in older brother Jeric's final TL season), 9-0 in 2010 and 15-1 in 2010-11.

Teng won his first 31 assignments in the TL Juniors Division. (It must be noted that he also earned a TL title with the Xavier Aspirants in 2008 as a seventh-grader.)

Teng owns a three-year career scoring average of 27.6 points in 34 games (937 total points) so far in the TL Juniors Division. A former PH Youth team member, the 6-1 swingman is bidding to become the first Golden Stallion ever to win four TL Juniors titles during his four-year high school tenure and the first Tiong Lian player ever to capture three MVP awards.

Opening ceremonies for the January 14 start of the 2012 TL season will be 12 noon.

At 1 p.m., Xavier School opens defense of its Juniors crown against Chiang Kai Shek College in a battle between the two winningest schools in Tiong Lian history. CKSC has the most Juniors titles ever at 14 while XS is second at 10.

At 2:30 p.m., host Grace Christian College takes on Uno High School.

In the main game of a tripleheader at 4:00 p.m., Hope Christian College tackles St. Stephen's High School.

St.Jude Catholic School, which will now be coached by former De La Salle player Cholo Villanueva (a member of the Green Archers' 2007 UAAP championship unit), drew a bye on opening day.

Chiang Kai Shek College has hired the services of coach Goldwin Monteverde, who had mentored the Judenites for the past six seasons. Monteverde steered St. Stephen’s High School to the TL Juniors championship in 2004 and 2005 behind Kish Co, who went on to play for De La Salle in the UAAP and was a teammate of Villanueva on the Green Archers’ 2007 UAAP title squad.
