The Golden Stallions, who are in the first year of the post-Jeron Teng era under rookie coach Jerome Oliva, trailed for most of the first 25 minutes of the game that was dominated by tenacious defense by both sides.

XS fell behind by seven points, 24-17, at halftime and as much as eight, 27-19, before the Gold and Blue rallied behind 2011 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship campaigner Kyles Lao and Jarrell Lim.

Hope Christian High School was still in the driver’s seat, 55-49, on a pair of triples by Mark Nuñez with three minutes left when Xavier School uncorked a 9-bomb to take the upperhand, 58-55. Lim went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 11.7 seconds, including a pair with four ticks left. However, hotshot Jollo Go sent the game into a five-minute extension with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

XS gave up the first two points in overtime (a Go basket) then dominated the rest of the way, getting its largest lead, 68-63, with 25.8 seconds remaining as Lao, Paolo Susmerano and Lim combined for 11 of the Golden Stallions’ 13 OT points and HCHS collapsed into a maze of errors and missed free throws by Jobert Mercado.

Lao was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points, including 19 after the first half and 11 in the game-turning third quarter. The ambidextrous 6-foot southpaw also collected eight rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes.

Lim tossed in 18 markers and 6-6 George Isaac Go, another former national teamer, contributed nine points, nine boards and two blocks for Xavier School.

Hope Christian HS got 17 points from Mercado, 15 from Go and 10 from Arjan Dela Cruz, who all came off the bench for coach Stevenson Tiu’s charges.

Meanwhile, defending Juniors titlist Chiang Kai Shek College improved its record to 3-0 with an 88-48 thrashing of winless St. Jude Catholic School.

The Blue Dragons never trailed throughout the mismatch as all 13 players fielded in by head coach Goldwin Monteverde scored at least two points.

St. Jude Catholic School was led by Francis Go, who registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
